It happened; either you or your soon to be ex have chosen to move on from your marriage. It’s hard, and there is no getting around that, but you should take care of yourself.
We’ve written many times about the necessity of staying cool, calm and collected during a divorce. A simpler, mediated divorce is easier on your kids, easier on you. But easy doesn’t mean “without any stress at all,” and in times like these, we can all take whatever stress relief is available.
It’s about settling into a new mindset
Your marriage, even though it didn’t work out, was a partnership you relied on. There’s a great chance that a huge part of your day-to-day life was the work of ongoing negotiation. However, once you’ve moved out, you get to set your new priorities.
How to destress while going through divorce mediation
Since self-care options outside the home are limited, there are some tried and true methods to prioritize yourself while staying home. Now that you’re going through a divorce and on your own, you can:
- Set aside time for your entertainment
- Create a home exercise program for yourself
- Take an online class on a topic that interests you
It’s not at all selfish to take the time to prioritize things that interest you and only you. In fact, you may find that when you’ve made yourself a priority, you find yourself better able to care for your family.
Enjoy the little things
If there was ever an aspect of your routine that you’ve always considered a chore, but your spouse thought was essential, you can drop it. While divorcing, especially at a time in history where there aren’t a lot of other things to do, it is the little freedoms that can bring real pleasure to your life.
