Man deals with child support issues for child who isn’t his

Many people deal with child support problems, from being unable to pay or not receiving payments on time to feeling that they have been ordered to pay too much. For Pennsylvania families, there are legal options and outlets that can help parents deal with any distressing child support issues. Any parent who is struggling may be interested in the story of a man who has been fighting for 20 years to rectify a child support payment order for a child that he says is not his.

The man was first ordered to pay child support in 1995. He says he quickly let authorities know that he was not the father of the child. The mother of the child also acknowledged that isn’t the father. The man says he paid for and took a paternity test to prove he wasn’t the father, and he mailed those results to the attorney general of his home state.

Despite the efforts the man says he took to prove he wasn’t the father, he says the state of Hawaii is still seeking payment. The state says he is $24,000 behind. There are apparently liens on the man’s property, and he also says he can’t get a passport due to the child support order hanging over his head. The state is not sure why the results of a DNA test did not put an end to the matter.

A case of mistaken paternity can be costly for an individual facing child support issues. However, in Pennsylvania, if a parent is proven to be a parent and ordered to pay, not abiding by that order can lead to a series of consequences. Any parent facing action for nonpayment may benefit from pursuing a modification of child support if they have had a significant change in financial circumstances. Those questioning a claim of paternity may benefit from seeking advice and assistance to help them resolve the issue formally.
