When a two people have a child together, both parents have a responsibility to the child as well as to each other. Meeting the child’s emotional and physical needs is part of fulfilling these responsibilities in Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, some parents are unable to meet their legal responsibilities regarding their child and could potentially face serious legal ramifications as a result. One out-of-state man recently faced felony charges for failing to pay child support.
According to state officials, the 47-year-old father owes approximately $18,000 in child support. A result, he was charged with a felony in connection with the missed payments. He pleaded guilty to the charges.
A judge recently sentenced him to five years with the Department of Corrections. However, those five years were suspended so he can pay the money he owes, but he was placed on probation. In addition to paying $300 each month to cover what the missed payments, he was also ordered to pay a fine and court costs.
There are many parents who want nothing more than to meet their needs of their child through child support. Unfortunately, their circumstances — such as the loss of a job or an illness — may prevent them from doing so. Often, judges in Pennsylvania will take these circumstances into consideration if addressed properly with the court. However, failing to meet financial obligations without seeking a formal modification can have serious ramifications, potentially resulting in criminal charges as the man in this case faced. By addressing their concerns with the court, parents who are struggling to make court-ordered payments can not only avoid these consequences, but may be in a better position to preserve their relationship with their child.
